The boys in the photo below had been friends and teammates since middle school. (They’re both like sons to me, but I only gave birth to the catcher.) As kids they promised each other that they’d play Division 1 baseball together after high school.
The only problem was, the offers were not flooding in during their junior or senior years. I remember them lamenting in wonder,
“Nobody wants either of us?!”
But what could they do? They could stay mentally tough and stay focused on the next step. So they did.
They went to separate junior colleges with their promise intact. The pitcher went to Motlow State Community College and the catcher went to Columbia State.
At the end of their sophomore years, sure enough, they each turned down several other offers to be teammates (and roommates) at Tennessee Tech. Their team was predicted to come in 6th in the conference but they came in first. The team (and coaching staff) was amazing and these two were both starters there.
Ultimately the catcher would even get drafted by the Rockies & chase the dream for a few more seasons.
Clearly, you don’t HAVE to be the early bloomer to see your dreams come true.
Life is bigger than baseball though, and the important thing is the lessons we learn along the way. Lessons about winning, friendship, teamwork, goal-setting, and then being a great spouse, parent & leader.
If you work with young players, you want them to win right now and later! You want to know that you’re helping them make their dreams come true. Building their mental game, and your own, is one of the most important keys to all of that.
Right now, I invite you to the MENTAL GAME ALL-STAR SUMMIT, where you can join me and 19 of my favorite mental game experts. We want every parent & coach reading this to know they are bringing out the best in their athletes. We want to help you also bring out the best in your SELF. Win big, on and off the diamond.
